A guest post from Poker Junkie
A new phenomenon has developed in part due the proliferation of online poker. That phenomenon is called shortstacking, and there are a great many opinions on the merits and ethics of shortstacking as a poker strategy in no limit hold’em poker.
What is Shortstacking in Online Poker?
Shortstacking is simply buying into a game for the minimum amount. If a no-limit game advertises blinds of $2/$4, most players will buy in from anywhere between $200 and $400. A short stacking player will buy in for whatever the minimum for the table might be, $80, for example.
Mostly playing poker online, short stackers generally wait for premium hands, then move in on or before the flop, figuring that their stack represents such a small percentage of their opponents’ stacks that they are likely to get called by a wide range of weaker hands. The idea is to minimize risk while still allowing a significant potential gain. After a successful double up, the shortstacker will often depart, squirreling his potential winnings and moving on to another table or poker room.
Effectiveness of Short Stacking
Some players swear by short stacking. They feel that if done with patience and discipline, they can eventually amass a large bankroll playing this way. Other players don’t have the patience for this type of play, and don’t want to miss out on collecting an opponent’s entire chip stack if they make a huge hand.
Many players hate to face short stacks because they feel it kills action, since players may not enter a pot for fear that the short stacker will move all in. That is not the short stacker’s problem, though.

Well I'm off to Vegas in the morning. There are a few issues with the hand converter I need to iron out so anyone who sent feedback you haven't been forgotten. I will have the laptop with me over there so during some downtime I might get something done but we all deserve a break don't we?

Just fixed a problem with PT hands so if anyone was having difficulty with them they should be ok now. Thanks for those who provided feedback on this. Helps me to keep on top of things.

There appear to be a number of issues with the hand converter in particular the calculation of bet sizes etc. It's very difficult to pin-point these without example hands so I have added a report error link on the converter. When you are viewing a hand and it is not diplaying the hand as it should just click the link, fill out the feedback form detailing what was incorrect and I will be able to look at the specific example.
Another issue appears to be the converter remembering your choices from the last visit. The converter uses cookies to save your choices and attempts to default to those preferences the next time you visit. I find that IE (in particular IE7) can sometimes behave strangely when it comes to cookies so you may need to check your settings to ensure IE is accepting cookies from this site. Particularly if you are using the molly-coddling Vista.

As the title says the hand converter will now accept PT hand histories. It will require you to enter your nickname as the PT histories don't indicate who you are so if you are selecting to have your nickname to here or whatever then you'll need to add it in. I'll be adding cookie support soon that will remember your preferences including your nickname.

I'm currently working on updating the Hand Converter to accept Poker Tracker Hand Histories. One simple problem. I fly to Vegas on Wednesday morning so I'm afraid it's unlikely to get done until August at this stage. I considered cancelling my trip to the City of Sin (in another life) but decided I may as well have my holiday.

Just a quick mention of the iPoker Hand Converter I've added to the site. Alot of play on iPoker sites and alot of us use the wonderful hand converter from flopturnriver.com but unfortunately it doesn't support the xml files used by iPoker. So heres the solution. Just upload your iPoker xml files and select the hand you want to convert. Go to the iPoker Hand Converter.

Wow March already. Anyway we are now testing the new free blog system. You can register with the site and create your own blog. You can also import posts from any existing blog you may have. The whole system is in it's very early stages so there will undoubtedly be issues. If you do decide to create a blog and have problems then email admin@talking-poker.com and we'll try to help you out as soon as possible. In the meatime we'll be adding more functionality to the whole blog system. The idea is to provide poker bloggers with what they need that other blog sites might not provide. Poker Images, hand commenting, online clock and so on. Here we can make poker orientated blogging the priority.

Remarkably we have a new episode for you all just in time for Christmas. We decided to talk to 2 of the guys most involved in Irish poker, Tom Murphy and Mike Lacey. From reporting on events all over the world to organising their own tournaments in Ireland to running their own online skin these guys are deeply involved in alot of what matters in poker. As ever our sound problems were back to haunt us but I think you'll find the chat more than makes up for it. Both Tom and Mike have plenty to say.
- Our two guests report on the Irish players in events all over the world on their site AntesUp.Com
- they also now have an online site called Green Joker Poker which also organises offline tournaments in particular their phenomenally successful Winter Festival in Drogheda this year.
Happy Christmas to all our listeners and a New Year of suckouts to you all.

Well it's finally here. Episode 4. This time around we are joined by Dave "Roundtower" Murray and Dominic "5starpool" Heever. Dave finished 48th in this years WSOP and Dom reached the final table of the European Poker Masters so the calibre of these guys is in no doubt. We talk to them about their experiences in said tournaments and as both are accomplished Omaha players we also got some words from them on their approach to "Yamaha". It's late and need sleep so tomorrow I will add some notes and relevent links etc. For now download and enjoy. Theres also a little treat at the end so don't miss it.
-
Dom's Blog-
Dave is a popular poster on 2 plus 2s PLO forum and was recently "in the well".
- Clip featured is from the famous
Rounders.
- song forced on your ears is from possibly my favorite band,
The Wedding Present.

The new episode should be with you in a few days and subsequent episodes will be more regular from now on. The next show will feature 2 of our Irish success stories from the WSOP Main event talking about their experience, their advice for players with ambitions to play this famous tournament and much more. Stay tuned.

John MacGill, Ireland's highest finisher in the World Series Main Event was interviewed during the week on TodayFM's Last Word show. It's a good interview which thankfully remains positive for the most part.

Last night we got the very first show recorded. It features HectorJelly and MrPillowTalk, 2 famous names from Ireland's biggest and busiest poker forum,
boards.ie.
The whole thing went really well and both myself and Dave were delighted with the results. You can tell Dave has done radio before because he is very comfortable in the role of interviewer. I suspect it may take a while before I can demonstrate the same kind of profesionalism. In any case we had fun and the talk was very interesting and well worth a listen.
Over the next few days Dave will be editing it together then we'll all have a listen and assuming it gets the thumbs up it will be released to the world. Fingers crossed folks will like it.

Our Nicky from boards was on TV3 today talking about turning pro as a poker player. In a rather strange setting outdoors Nicky deals himself some cards as a bemused reporter looks on.
We can but hope that despite the rather ridiculous way the media tends to look at poker and the players that eventually it may reap some rewards for those involved. Sponsorship is the great hope for many players who specialise in tournaments.Anyway Nicky comes out o.k. whereas TV3 looks as professional as usual.
I recorded it and have created 2 video files. One for you broadbanders and one for you poor dialups...
